TAA Welcomes New K9
The Tucson Airport Authority Police Department (TAAPD) welcomed a new K9 to the team at the end of December. Systlunds is a German Shorthair Pointer and is handled by veteran TAAPD officer Danny Mesa, a 20-year veteran of the force. The dog's name may seem unique, however, at the inception of the K9 program, which was created by TSA after 9/11, all K9s in the TSA training program were named after people who lost their lives in the 9/11 attack. TAAPD has a team of 3 K9’s that are used for explosive detection. The dogs are trained at TSA’s training facility at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. The TAAPD K9 teams also play an important role for our region, as they are part of the Pima Regional Bomb Squad. That being said, you may see members of the TAAPD K9 Team at high profile events throughout the region or when activated when there is a credible threat outside of the airport. Keep in mind, however, that our first priority is the airport, and we always ensure the airport is covered when authorizing a K9 team to go offsite.

TAA Takes Delivery of New Fire Truck
In January, the Tucson Airport Authority Fire Department (TAAFD) accepted delivery of two new Rosenbauer 3,000-gallon Fire Trucks. These new trucks are an important advancement in our environmental stewardship as the airport moves away from AFFF fire-fighting foam that contained PFAS. The trucks being replaced were at the end of their useful service life.
Fun Fact: If you are wondering why these trucks are red when most other airport fire trucks are yellow, that is because these fire trucks were TAA funded and not paid for with federal grant funds. The FAA mandates the yellow high visibility paint color when FAA grant funds are used.
